2016 Healthier Me

Hi everyone Just checking in on how your journey to a “healthier me” is going..
Some Food for thought….
our bodies are not simple machines where we can track weight gain by just tracking calories you take in compared to calories you burn.  This is akin to when i was a chid i thought like a child…
  • cals in > cals out = weight gain.
  • eating FAT causes you to gain FAT (weight)

This thinking has led to the standard american diet, Diabetes, Heart Disease, Obesity.

But it doesn’t work that way.  Science & Research has shown us that eating low calories and exercising more does work, but it isn’t sustainable!  Just look at why there is no reunion show for the biggest looser.  They loose a ton of weight but gain it all back. You must break the cycle.
I believe you can follow several nutrition plans but they must meet a few tenants to work…
  1. Change what you eat – less sugar, less starch, more veggies
  2. Get into Ketosis – when your body burns fat natural
  3. Makes sense  – Eat less processed manufactured, more real foods
  4. You feel good – Achieve your goals with sustainable results
I’ve been following a ketogenic low carb diet for over a year now.  At first i didn’t realize what it was called, i just changed what i ate, resulting in my body going into ketosis to burn fat and as a result lost weight and felt great.  I did a ton of research into how the body works, obesity, and diabetes, so what i did made sense.  And i’ve been like this for over a year.  It works.

How to get your body into Fat burning mode

How to get your body into Fat burning mode!

Did you know your body can burn CARBS or FAT for energy?  The Western Diet, is designed to promote the intake of CARBS for so called energy.  Some CARBS are good such as from vegetables, but the CARBS from sugars and breads are bad for you due to overconsumption, manufacturing processing methods, and genetic modification.  These CARBS gets converted into glucose and are stored as FAT around your tummy, thighs, back side, etc.  But there is something you can do to change this.

You want to get your body into FAT burning mode.  Your body can switch its primary energy source from glucose and burn FATS just by reducing the number of CARBS you eat.  Remember exercise is only 20% of the solution, diet is the 80%.  So CARDIO exercises are not a major factor reducing bad carbs is the solution.  When you are primarily burning FATS it’s called Ketosis and this is  good thing.

Hear is how your body’s machine works…. As we eat food, our bodies convert CARBS into glucose. This glucose is used for energy.  But you can only deal with so much glucose and once you reach that limit.   The body produced the hormone Insulin to convert the extra glucose into FAT for storage (energy later).    Did you miss it?  Yes, this is the cause of obesity – high insulin to convert the extra glucose into FAT for storage.   And with a high carb diet (Bagels, Pasta, Potatoes, etc), the diet actually promotes your body producing more insulin thus causing Obesity.

Our bodies are amazing, they are actually capable of burning FATS and Glucose.  Your can shift your bodies primary energy source from Glucose to FATS just by reducing the number of CARBS you eat.  This puts you in what is called Ketosis or Fat burning.   To start, reduce the number of carbs you eat to under 100g per day.  More is better, but start with under 100g.

Once in ketosis, you will discover energy and weight loss.  I’ve been eating this way for years, and this past year I moved to a nutrition diet focused on staying in ketosis and it’s health benefits.  Also this is a huge benefit for diabetics (more on that later).

Ketosis is good, and their is a strong causation relationship between CARBS and obesity.  This is not just my opinion research for yourself:

2016 Sankofa Health Challenge Day 2

Hi everyone,

Hopefully everyone got off to a start today (or are planning to get started soon).  Today’s thought is S.A.D. – the Standard American Diet…

Our bodies are a delicate balance of human machinery, we just need to keep our bodies in balance and let it do the work.  most people think it’s exercise but exercise is only 80-90% of the solution, the rest is what you eat.

Your body need carbs, fats, and proteins (called macro-nutrients), just not at the levels we’ve been led to believe.  Just look at the results of the Standard American Diet (S.A.D) which has been promoting a high carb, low fat food pyramid (or plate)… the result is off the chart Obesity, Heart Disease, Diabetes, and lots of drugs to offset.

The S.A.D diet It’s not working.  When there is bad policy and evidence of it, change the policy.  We need to eat the right balance of macro’s

I’ll go into more details, later, but in general:

  • Carbs/Sugars are not good for you
  • Carbs/Breads are not good for you
  • Carbs/Fruit juices are not good for you (just concentrated liquid sugar)
  • Carbs/Vegetables are good for you
  • Fats are good for you
  • Proteins in moderation are good for you
  • Fiber is good for you

FOR YOUR PLAN..

for now avoid Sugars, Breads, Fruit Juices and drink lots of water.  Read your labels, if you can’t pronounce it avoid it.
